CVS's Tobacco Free Life

5 years ago CVS made the decision to stop selling tobacco products in their stores. They made this decision based on a couple different factors, not only for the good of their customers but also for the benefits they predicted it would have for their company. The termination of selling tobacco products was largely motivated by CVS mission to become more than a convenient store and also a health care marketplace. In addition to health care CVS saw that in the future tobacco would stop future growth of the company due to recent anti-smoking campaigns. (Click here to learn more about CVS business standpoints on the cut of tobacco products in stores.)

In just five years CVS was able to see substantial results in America and the effect it had on smokers. A study by The American Public Health Association, showed that approximately 100 million fewer packs of cigarettes were bought in states where CVS held 15% or more of the pharmacy retail markets. Also, people who bought their cigarettes exclusively from CVS were 38% more likely to stop purchasing cigarettes completely. If the affect over 5 years have shown this many results it looks promising for helping end the smoking epidemic in America

Do you think other stores will see the results CVS saw as a business and follow their lead by stopping the sales of tobacco products? What other things do you think businesses can do to see the use of tobacco in America go down?

  2. I believe that other stores will see the results CVS saw by not selling cigarettes and tobacco products. Society has frowned upon smoking ever since we found out the effects it has on people's health. I think another thing businesses can do is offer supplements to quit smoking when someone buys a pack of cigarettes or tobacco products.
