“ I love this time of year in California, it always has that nice Barbecue scent. That nice scent of burning homes.” In my visit to California for fall break many of our planned activities had to be substituted for indoor activities because off the poor air quality. Soccer games were canceled due to all the smoke in the air. California fires rise up again as the dry season has begun. California fires have burned 160,000 acres of land in the past year, thankfully a significant reduce in fires from the same time last year, but still not good.
There are currently 10 fires burning in California, the biggest one currently at 10,296 acres and 75% contained, and the smallest recorded at the moment is 91 acres 80% contained. (Click Here to see maps) Schools near fires are canceling their days or requiring students and teachers to wear masks due to the unhealthy air quality caused by the fires. It is especially important that children and elderly and very cautious with outdoor activities in low air quality zones because growing organs are susceptible to respiratory system issues.
Do you think if you lived in California would you take the low air quality warnings seriously?

  1. Nice post, Maggie. I think I would, but perhaps living in an area makes residents so used to the events there that they don't take some warnings the way an outsider like me would.

  2. From Nathan:
"I think that this poses a huge threat to California due to the fact that it is continuing to burn thousands of acres of land and it is effecting everyone in someway. Kids are having to learn new safety drills in schools and many people can't continue with their normal activities."
